MAX

Last night we saw Where the Wild Things Are (thank you, San Diego Blood Bank) with some friends of ours and two of their kids. We had heard mixed reivews, but Aaron was not to be deterred so we all went anyway. Verdict? A good movie. Visually stunning and creative. It was very interesting to see life through a child's mind and imagination. A kids movie? Not so much. One of the children said it was good, but she didn't want to see it again because it was sad and the other kid was very touched by the sad emotional parts. It didn't scare them, but it is not a movie for children. I think it is best for the adults who grew up reading it and want to relive part of their childhood.

I know many of you have kids so keep this in mind if you are trying to decide who should see it.

it's hard to explain. if you have seen any of spike jonze's (the director) work it might help. very rapid camera movement, sudden jumps/abrupt movement, adult humor (not crude, just not stuff that kids really understand), adult themes.
ex: one monster rips another monster's arm off in one scene because he is mad. no blood, no screaming, the monsters acknowledge it and move on. in another scene the monster has a stick where his arm used to be. one of the kids watching the movie turned to her mom and asked where the monster's arm went. nothing gory, but just hard to explain to a 6 year old. one of the kids who saw it was really, really sad (crying) after the movie was over because of the emotion at the end. he was fine a bit later, but judge whether your kids can handle that stuff. does that help?

hmmmm, i was wondering about that one. i thought we would just see it before the kids. my kids are funny, they still pretty much only like cartoon movies anyway. we plan to rent it and watch it first. thanks for the heads up!
